7 Ways You Can Support Survivors and Bring Holiday Cheer

The holidays have arrived, and for many survivors, this may be the first time they are safe, in a home, or sharing it with loved ones. You can help to make the holidays bright with these easy ways to give the gifts of joy, love, and wonderful memories.

  1. Decorating. Can you have too many decorations? Whether a survivor lives in a residential program or their own place, decorating their home inside or out can bring joy. Consider partnering with a local program to decorate or donate supplies for residents to decorate their homes themselves.

  1. Purchase with Purpose. Looking for the perfect gift? Many survivors have used their skills and talents to create beautiful products for purchase. Whether jewelry, soaps, scarves, or more, consider making a purchase and economically empowering a survivor. Check out our blog to learn more about Freedom Businesses and where to purchase.

  1. Holiday Activities. This time of year brings many opportunities to get into the holiday spirit. Consider how you can give some holiday joy by donating tickets to a show or event, funds to participate in an activity, or connecting with a program to host an event such as a cookie decorating party, tree decorating, or a gift exchange.

  1. Wish Lists. What if you could receive exactly what you wanted for Christmas this year? There are programs that have put together wish lists so you can know exactly what survivors need! Items can range from home goods to personal hygiene items to books and clothes. Check out program lists to help make survivors’ wishes come true!

  1. Meals. Do you love to cook? Consider cooking a meal for program participants, or better yet, teach them how to cook a holiday meal! You never know how long it has been since someone has had a home cooked meal, and you might be surprised at the smile this can bring.

  1. Kids Toys. The joy of the holidays through the eyes of a child is priceless. Many survivors have children and would love to provide presents for them. Connect with your local program to learn how you can support parents this holiday season with toys, books, treats, and more.

  1. Monetary Donations. Support a survivor by supporting the program that gives them safety, opportunities, and hope. As you consider your year-end gifts this year, consider giving the gift that will make a lasting impact in the life of another.

*Locate an aftercare program in your area by contacting a local task force, coalition, district attorney’s office, attorney general’s office, or police department for a list of programs they know of or partner with. A few examples of programs include:

Generate Hope, Glory House of Miami, Out of Darkness, Redeemed, Refuge for Women, Tamar Center, The A21 Campaign, The Salvation Army (look for a local chapter), The Samaritan Women, Thistle Farms, Wellspring Living.
